What is a skin tag?

A skin tag is a small, noncancerous skin growth. Skin tags are often attached to the skin by a thin stalk that supports a soft, fleshy bulb. Skin tags are prevalent in adults; they’re harmless but may bother you or have an unsightly appearance.

Skin tags frequently develop in the following areas:

  • Eyelids
  • Neck
  • Armpits
  • Groin area
  • Buttock folds
  • Near or under the breasts

Skin tags may occur anywhere on the body.

What causes skin tags?

The exact cause of skin tags isn’t clearly understood. Both men and women get skin tags, most common in middle-aged adults. Obesity and pregnancy are conditions that are associated with a higher rate of skin tags.

How does a doctor remove a skin tag?

Your trained and experienced provider at Kingsway Medispa & Wellness Center can remove skin tags with a pain-free, in-office procedure using one of the following methods:

Snipping

First, your provider applies a topical numbing gel to the area. When your skin is numb, your provider uses surgical-grade scissors to cut off the skin tag.

Freezing, or cryotherapy

This method involves the application of liquid nitrogen to your skin tag. It then dries up and falls off after a week or two.

Burning

This method uses a tiny electrode to focus electric current into the tissue of your skin tag. The skin tag falls off soon after the procedure. Burning may sound scary, but it’s fast and painless.

What are the risks of skin tag removal?

Skin tag removal is a standard procedure that’s generally quite safe. There’s a slight risk of infection or scarring, but these are extremely rare. Be sure you follow your Kingsway Medispa & Wellness Center provider’s instructions for at-home care following your skin tag removal procedure.

Will my skin tag grow back after removal?

Once a skin tag has been removed, it won’t regrow. However, new skin tags may occur and may develop in a location close to the site of the skin tag you’ve removed.

Can I remove my skin tag myself?

You should never attempt to remove a skin tag yourself, as this can cause bleeding, scarring, or infection.

If you have a skin tag that looks ugly or bothers you, call Kingsway Medispa & Wellness Center  to schedule a removal procedure or make an appointment online.
